Craig set Stepping Out up because he could see the potential for public services to be transformed by the introduction of enterprise. A high reputation, serial social entrepreneur, Craig founded the £7 million UK disability social enterprise VoiceAbility. Author of ‘How to Step Out’ and ‘Your Chance to Change the World’, he is a regular columnist for The Guardian and MJ. Craig has an MBA from the Open University and is a Trustee of social investor Impetus Trust.
Administrator and Business Co-ordinator
Rachel is our super organised and effective Co-ordinator. With extensive experience of supporting consulting businesses, Rachel ensures our activity runs smoothly and efficiently through the marketing, financial and project management areas of our business. She co-ordinates all of our events and activities.
Richard’s career to date has been focused on driving change and transforming public services. As a former local government officer, Richard brings a wealth of experience and expertise built from delivering an array of ground breaking projects across a full range of alternative service delivery models, including outsourcing, joint ventures, shared services and local authority trading in addition to social enterprise.
OD and HR Specialist
Amy is an experienced OD and HR professional, with a passion for creating more effective working environments and helping organisations deliver strategic value from their people. Amy has worked with a wide range of individuals and teams to bring about successful change and transformation including service launch, service redesign and team capability development work. She has led projects across a range of public and private sector organisations as well as social enterprises and mutuals.
A high class financial consultant with considerable experience at Financial Director level in public services. David has direct experience supporting the development of spin out businesses, focusing on financial modelling. David’s roles with Papworth Trust, and as a consultant supporting organisations such as Crossroads Care, have seen him modelling changing income streams including payment by results contracts, and moves from block contracts to micro-commissioned services. He has also overseen complex system redesigns as small organisations merge and require new bespoke financial processes.
Jonathan is a management consultant and executive coach who specialises in helping individuals, teams and organisations learn how to realise change more successfully. He helps organisations to develop in-house coaching and mentoring schemes, as well as facilitating senior team development programmes and undertaking individual executive coaching assignments. Previously Director of HR at Carlsberg-Tetley and Group H.R. Director at Express Dairies plc, he has been an independent consultant for the last 12 years, and has worked with clients in the public and private sector in the U. K and overseas.
Terry is a strategic finance director and currently serves on the boards of a number of spin outs. A chartered accountant, Terry has executive and non-executive board experience in local government, housing and contracting public services before specialising in establishing new social purpose companies. Since joining Stepping Out, Terry has supported successful spin outs from Salford, Warrington, Bury and London probation.
Social Impact and Finance Specialist
Heidi trained as a Chartered Accountant and specialised in tax, having worked for PwC and managed a smaller accountancy practice. Since 2008 Heidi has owned the UK’s only firm of Chartered Accountants that is a Community Interest Company. Heidi has 15 years’ experience of working with charities and social enterprises to develop their financial sustainability, secure finance and report on their social impact. Heidi volunteers for a community organisation working with young people and is trustee for Cancer United - a charity supporting people recovering from cancer.
Rob recognises that success in business growth is about finding the right people. As Commercial Director for ConsultingTools he built the international network from 1 partner to 35 worldwide. Rob then set up as a freelance consultant working with The Gap Partnership to support their international expansion, finding, on-boarding, training and managing delivery partners in six countries, Rob secured partners who delivered an exponential rise in turnover in their first year. He prefers to work in-house with clients to become a true part of their team, working on their behalf in a number of specialist recruitment and consultancy roles.
A former CEO of a charity (St Giles Trust), Dan has direct experience of leading a VCSE organisation through transformation. Now Dan uses his knowledge to help other organisations to develop their offer. Recent assignments include evaluating the portfolio of VCSE organisations supported by investor Impetus Trust, conducting a review of VCSE responses to homelessness in Oxford and developing a business plan for a new community safety social enterprise in Torbay.
Tendering Support and BD Specialist
An entrepreneur, business leader and exceptional tender writer, Rob has been there, done that and now offers his experience to help a range of social businesses. Having proven his commercial acumen in growing his own social care business, Rob now works alongside the leaders and commercial teams in third sector organisations. Rob provides hands on support in bid writing, as well as coaching and strategic direction to improve capacity within organisations. Rob’s track record ensures credibility, his methods are practical and supportive.
Branding and Marketing Specialist
With a track record of supporting social businesses and enterprises, Brigit has focussed on providing support to spin out businesses. Brigit’s work covers setting up new brands, websites and communication functions in brand new businesses. She has overseen the brand development of Independence Matters, Catalyst Choices and Aspire. She also provides on-going support to organisations that may never have had to have a marketing function before – such as with Leading Lives where she is retained as a marketing manager and AHP Suffolk where she is helping the management team review their marketing and communications strategy.
Business Planning Specialist
Nick is a trusted adviser, senior business manager and non-executive. He offers high-calibre business planning and change consultancy, primarily to mutual and social enterprises. With a background in business and finance, Nick is passionate about helping social organisations set a clear direction along with credible delivery and financial plans that target best value for owners, members and clients. An excellent relationship builder and clear thinker, Nick brings high quality ideas and effective communication to help teams to achieve and sustain their goals.
Fiona has enjoyed working across all sectors and leading organisations in Chief Executive and Trustee roles. She is now a Company Director who provides consultancy services and interim management for a wide range of organisations. Fiona enjoys assisting leaders and their teams to pursue business, achieve their ambitions and succeed. She has an MBA from the University of Leicester and is a Trustee of After Umbrage.
